Self Protection for the Trans Community

Erik Kluzek

Room – Elliot

The trans community as a marginalized minority group has already been targeted for violence. Recent rehtoric have only intensified that risk. As a group we will be discussing and practicing ways to protect ourselves and the community against this violence. Self protection are all the things that are done around decreasing the odds for violent attacks and improving the likelihood of escape with minimal harm. Self defense is a small part of an overall self protection mindset. The model we will go over has awareness as the base, assertiveness as the mid tier, and aggression (active physical self defense as the top). The bottom two layers are integrated into daily life, while that top level is less likely. However we will still practice some simple self defense drills to help empower our mindset. Desired outcomes for attendees is to feel more: prepared, empowered, mindful, and observant of possibilities of violence that could target them.

12 PM

Stevie White

Self-care is often framed in current perspectives as an individual practice to combat the stressors of daily life. In all the time that we were raised on the gender we were assigned at birth, we have received a LOT of cis-hetero-normative and compulsory monogamous social conditioning and messaging that has severely limited our abilities, as transgender individuals, to be in touch with our bodies, minds, and hearts in a way that is authentic to our unique experiences and needs. This workshop will cover some of the basics of living and loving as a trans individual that were not covered in your high-school sex-ed classes (or pretty much anywhere!), and will include topics such as consent; the differences between sex, gender, and romance; kink and non-monogamy, and what even is “normal” being in romantic and sexual relationships as a trans person.

What is ballroom? Ballroom is a liberation story. A space for Black, Brown queer and trans joy, creativity, and radical self-expression. Ballroom culture or ball culture is creative outlet for joy centering QTBIPOC members of our community! Started when a drag queen by the name of Crystal LaBeija broke away from the predominantly white, racist, and transphobic drag scene of downtown New York in the late 1960’s and started her own scene, a scene that centered Black and Brown transwomen (femme queens). Fast-forward over 50-odd years, ballroom houses and chapters now span the globe, and also include a local (kiki) scene here in Colorado, itself also founded by members of the now ROYAL House of LaBeija!! Come learn about the CO ballroom scene by a Star member of a local kiki house. Afterwards, we will get into the basics of vogue dancing and a little practice!
